How to call a hotel or host abroad: bookings and check-in

You can call a hotel, hostel or host abroad by dialing the front-desk number in your browser, at the per-minute price shown before you call. A short call confirms a booking, an early check-in or an airport pickup with a person who can say yes.

How it works

  1. 01Find the number on your booking confirmation or on the property's own website.
  2. 02Check the time at the property and the reception hours. A small guesthouse may not answer overnight.
  3. 03Open QuikRing on Wi-Fi, type the number with its country code and check the price per minute.
  4. 04Tap Call, say your name, the dates and the booking reference, and ask what you need: confirmation, an early check-in or a transfer.
  5. 05Ask the desk to repeat the room type, the price and the cancellation terms back to you.
  6. 06Ask them to send the details by email and write down the name of the person you spoke to.

Practical tips

Confirm the booking

If anything differs from your confirmation, ask the desk to correct it and to send you an email. A confirmation in writing is what you will show at check-in if there is a mix-up.

Early check-in, late arrival and transfers

Tell the desk your flight number and your arrival time. If you will arrive after the front desk closes, ask how you get the key and whether the night staff know you are coming.

Hosts and small guesthouses

A host may answer from a mobile or a landline, in the local language and at unusual hours. Check the time there, keep your sentences short, and write down the address and the key or access arrangement they give you.

Front desk or reservations line

A hotel often lists a front desk number for guests and a separate reservations number for new bookings and changes. Call the front desk to confirm arrival details, a late check-in or a room request, and the reservations line to change dates or cancel. If your confirmation shows only one number, start there and ask to be transferred.

Call before you arrive about a late check-in

If your flight lands late, call the day before or on the morning of arrival, not from the lobby. Give your name, the booking reference and your expected arrival time, and ask how a night arrival works: where the key is, whether a door code is used and who is on duty. Write down what the desk tells you.

Landline or mobile: why the price differs

A hotel front desk is often a landline, while a guesthouse or a host often gives a mobile number. Each destination has one price per minute for landlines and one for mobiles, so two numbers for the same property can cost different amounts. The dialer shows the price of the exact number before you call, and the two worked examples below show both for the same country.

Before you dial

  • The full number with its country code, copied from the official website of the place you are calling, your card or the booking email.
  • Enough credit for a long call. Once the line is answered, a recorded menu and hold music are billed like talk time.
  • A quiet place and, if you have one, a headset, so you can hear a recorded menu clearly.
  • What the other side will ask for, such as a booking reference, an account number or a name, and a pen or a notes app.

Menus, holds and the keypad

Large companies and offices usually answer with a recorded menu. The keypad on the screen is grayed out while the line rings. Once the call is answered, tap the keys on the screen to choose an option. Digits typed on a computer keyboard are not sent to the call.

To reach an extension, dial the main number, wait until it is answered, then enter the extension on the on-screen keypad.

The dialer shows roughly how much time your balance covers and warns you in the last minute. If you top up during the call, the extra time is added.

If it does not connect

  • Check the country code and the digits, and drop a leading 0 after the code. The dialer tells you when a number does not look right.
  • Busy, unanswered and failed calls are never charged, so you can try again straight away.
  • If it rings out, check the time there. Desks and offices are closed at night.
  • Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, close other apps that use the microphone, or run the connection test under Free tools.
  • Toll-free numbers of other countries (0800, 1800 and similar) usually cannot be reached from abroad. Look for their regular number with an area code. US and Canadian toll-free numbers can be called.
  • Still stuck? Write to support with the number and roughly when you called.

Frequently asked questions

What if the hotel's number is a landline?

That's fine — QuikRing calls landlines and mobiles alike.

Do I pay if the hotel line is busy or nobody answers?

No. Busy, unanswered and failed calls are never charged. You pay once the call is answered.

Can I call a hotel if I have no local SIM?

Yes. The call goes from your browser over Wi-Fi or mobile data, so you need no SIM and no roaming plan.

Will the hotel see a number it knows?

By default the desk sees a QuikRing number. After your first top-up you can verify your own mobile as caller ID, so on routes that support it the desk sees a number tied to your booking. The dialer tells you when the call starts if a route can't.

What if the front desk speaks another language?

Say your name, the dates and the booking reference slowly, and spell names. Ask them to send the details by email, or call back when someone who speaks your language is on shift.

Can I use the hotel's Wi-Fi for the call?

Yes. Hotel Wi-Fi is shared, so if the audio breaks up, move closer to the router or switch to mobile data. If a call won't connect, the connection test under Free tools shows whether the network is the problem.

Does a mobile host cost more to call than a landline desk?

Often the two are priced differently. Mobile and landline numbers have their own price per minute in each country, and the dialer shows the price of the exact number before you call.

Can I call the hotel from the airport after I land?

Yes. Connect to the airport's Wi-Fi or use mobile data, open QuikRing in the browser and call the number from your confirmation. If the call doesn't connect, check the number and the time there and try again; a call that doesn't connect is not charged.

  • The person you call needs no app, no internet connection and no smartphone: their phone rings like any other call.
  • QuikRing can't call emergency numbers such as 911, 112 or 999. Use a mobile or landline phone for those.
