How to make phone calls without a SIM card

How it works
- 01Get online first: connect the phone, tablet or laptop to any Wi-Fi network, at home, in a hotel or in a café.
- 02Open QuikRing in your browser. The phone app isn't involved, so airplane mode or a No Service message doesn't matter while Wi-Fi is on.
- 03Sign in, and allow the microphone when the browser asks.
- 04Enter the number with its country code, and check the price per minute shown before you call.
- 05Tap Call. The person you call sees an ordinary incoming call and needs no app.
- 06Keep the browser open and stay in range of the Wi-Fi until you hang up.
Practical tips
An expired or empty SIM
A prepaid SIM that has run out only stops the phone app. Anything that runs in the browser over Wi-Fi, including a QuikRing call, still works, so you can call the shop or provider to sort the SIM out.
No carrier Wi-Fi Calling needed
Carrier Wi-Fi Calling needs your carrier to support it in that country and your plan to include it. QuikRing depends on neither: the call goes from the browser over the internet.
Android phones and tablets
On Android, use Chrome or another standard browser. No app is needed, and a tablet with no SIM slot works the same way.

A 10-minute call to a mobile in Mexico costs $0.60, at $0.06 per minute, with no SIM and no roaming.

The browser doesn't ask for the microphone, or says it is blocked
Click the site settings icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. If the browser allows it but nothing is heard, check that the browser is switched on in your system's microphone privacy settings.
You can't hear the other person
Check the volume and that sound goes to the speaker or headset you expect. Close other tabs and apps that use audio, such as a video meeting, then try again.
The other person hears an echo
Use a headset, or turn the speaker volume down. Echo happens when a laptop's microphone picks up its own speakers.
The call is choppy or drops
Move closer to the router or use a cable, and pause large downloads, uploads and video streams during the call. If the signal is weak on mobile data, switch to Wi-Fi, or the other way round. If a call drops because of a network problem, the dialer tells you.
The call doesn't connect
Check the country code and the number, then try again. Busy, unanswered and failed calls are never charged.

Can I call real phone numbers without any cellular service?
Yes. QuikRing connects directly over Wi-Fi or internet data to PSTN carrier networks, delivering a standard phone call to the recipient's phone without needing a SIM card in your device.
Does an expired or empty SIM stop me from calling?
No. QuikRing doesn't use the SIM at all. As long as the device has Wi-Fi, you can call from the browser.
Can I use QuikRing in airplane mode?
Yes, if you turn Wi-Fi back on while airplane mode stays on, which most phones allow. The call then goes over Wi-Fi, not the cellular network.
Can I receive calls without a SIM?
QuikRing is built for calls you place. If people also need to reach you, you can rent a QuikRing number from your dashboard, and it receives calls there.
Can I call emergency services without a SIM?
Not with QuikRing, which can't connect calls to 911, 112, 999 or other emergency numbers. In many countries a mobile phone can reach emergency services even without a SIM card, but some countries require one, so keep a phone with a working SIM for that.
