How to call your bank from abroad without roaming charges
A locked card or a fraud alert while traveling usually means calling a number back home. What roaming actually adds to that call, and how to reach your bank's real number from a browser instead.
The cheapest way to call your bank from abroad is usually not your phone's roaming plan. Roaming charges are set by your carrier, often billed per minute or as a flat daily fee, and a call that sits in an automated menu and hold music before reaching a person runs that meter the whole time. A web calling service that dials the bank's ordinary phone number over the internet skips roaming entirely.
A toll-free number often fails from a foreign phone
Banks publish an 800 or 888 number for customers calling from inside the US, and those numbers frequently fail, get charged as an international call anyway, or just don't connect when dialed from a foreign SIM.
The toll-free number on the back of your card can usually still be dialed from abroad through QuikRing, because the call enters the phone network in the US and reaches the bank like a domestic call. Our guide to calling US toll-free numbers from abroad explains how that works, and how to call your bank's US number from abroad covers the steps for a card or fraud line.
If a particular toll-free number does not accept calls from outside the US, use the number your bank publishes for calls placed from outside the US. Most large banks list one alongside their toll-free number, specifically for cardholders calling while traveling -- check your own bank's contact page, or see our support number directory for the banks we track.
Calling from your browser instead of roaming
QuikRing places the call over the internet and rings the bank's number as an ordinary incoming call, so you pay QuikRing's per-minute rate instead of your carrier's roaming rate, with no roaming plan or local SIM needed.

Frequently asked questions
Can I call my bank's toll-free number from abroad?
From a foreign SIM it often fails or gets billed as an international call, since a US toll-free number is only guaranteed to work from inside the US. Through QuikRing the call enters the phone network in the US, so the number on your card can usually be dialed. If a particular number does not accept calls from outside the US, use the number your bank publishes for calls from abroad.
Is there a way to call my bank without roaming charges?
Yes: a web calling service places the call over the internet and rings the bank's ordinary number, so the cost is that service's per-minute rate instead of your carrier's roaming rate.
Will an automated banking menu work over a web call?
Yes. QuikRing's dialer has a full keypad, so you can press through account verification and menu options exactly as you would on a regular phone call.
