Does an eSIM let you call phone numbers abroad?
Most travel eSIMs sell data only, no voice minutes and no real phone number. What that means the first time you need to make an actual call, and how to place one over the same connection.
Usually, no. Most travel eSIMs, the kind sold for a trip abroad and activated by scanning a QR code, are data-only: they get you online, but they don't include voice minutes or a phone number you can call out from the normal way.
Why most travel eSIMs skip voice
A data-only eSIM profile is simpler to sell and activate: no phone number to assign, no identity registration most countries require for a voice line, just a data connection. That's what keeps travel eSIMs cheap and instant to set up, and it's also why calling a real phone number isn't part of what you bought.
Without a voice line, the phone's own dialer can't place a call on that eSIM at all. Internet calling apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime still work over the data connection, but only to reach someone who has the same app, not an ordinary mobile or landline number.
Calling over the eSIM's own data connection
A browser calling service uses that same data connection, or any Wi-Fi you're on, to place a call onto the regular phone network, so it doesn't need voice minutes on the eSIM at all. QuikRing works this way: open it in a browser tab on the phone with your data eSIM active, type the number, and it rings as an ordinary call on the other end.

What still needs a real phone number
A data-only eSIM can't receive an inbound call or a text either, and neither can QuikRing's shared number by default: calls only go out. Verifying your own mobile as caller ID is free after your first top-up, and renting a US or Canadian number adds the ability to receive calls while traveling, if that's what the trip needs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a phone call with a data-only eSIM?
Not through the phone's regular dialer, since a data-only eSIM has no voice line. A browser calling service can place the call over the same data connection instead, without needing voice minutes on the eSIM.
Do travel eSIMs come with a phone number?
Most don't. A data-only eSIM gets you online but doesn't assign a phone number you can call out from or receive calls on.
Can I use WhatsApp calls instead of buying voice minutes?
Only to reach someone who also has WhatsApp and a data connection. It can't dial an ordinary mobile or landline number, which is the gap a browser calling service fills.
