How to call Nigeria: the +234 country code and number formats
Dial +234, then the Nigerian number without its leading 0. Worked examples for mobiles and Lagos or Abuja landlines, the exit code to use from the US and UK, and today's per-minute rate.
To call Nigeria, dial +234 and then the local number without its first 0. A Nigerian mobile written as 0803 123 4567 becomes +234 803 123 4567. The + stands for your country's exit code, which a mobile phone or a web dialer fills in for you.
Mobile numbers
Nigerian mobile numbers have 11 digits when written locally, always starting with 07, 08 or 09. Drop the 0 and you are left with the 10 digits that follow +234.
- Written locally: 0803 123 4567
- Dialed from abroad: +234 803 123 4567
- From a US landline: 011 234 803 123 4567
- From a UK landline: 00 234 803 123 4567
Landlines
Landlines include an area code after +234, again without its leading 0. Lagos is 1 and Abuja is 9, so a Lagos office listed as 01 234 5678 is dialed as +234 1 234 5678.
Most Nigerian homes and many businesses publish a mobile number instead of a landline, so if a landline does not connect, ask for a mobile number.
The mistakes that stop a call connecting
Almost every failed call to Nigeria comes down to one of three things:
- Keeping the 0: +234 0803 … has one digit too many and the network rejects it.
- Dialing 234 without the exit code from a landline: the + or the 011/00 prefix is what tells your carrier the call is international.
- A missing digit: a Nigerian mobile always has 10 digits after +234.
When to call
Nigeria uses West Africa Time, UTC+1, all year with no daylight saving. That puts Lagos 5 hours ahead of New York in summer and 6 in winter, level with London in summer and 1 hour ahead of it in winter.
