Skype is retired: what works for 1-800 calls now
Skype was retired on May 5, 2025. What still works for calling a US 1-800 number from abroad, and what does not.
Plenty of guides to calling a US toll-free number from abroad still say the same thing: use Skype. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025 (Microsoft support, checked October 7, 2026), so that advice is out of date.
What Microsoft says about Skype now
Microsoft's own pages describe a Skype Dial Pad inside Teams Free for people who already hold Skype Credit (Microsoft support, checked October 7, 2026). Neither page says whether toll-free numbers can be called from it, and we have not tested it. If you hold credit, check there before you rely on it.
Why the old advice mattered
US and Canada toll-free numbers (800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833) are paid for by the company that receives the call. A phone on a foreign network sits outside that arrangement, so its carrier may block the call or bill it as an ordinary international one. Skype was a way around that. What works now
