Why a university's 1-800 number often can't be dialed from abroad

Toll-free numbers are paid for by the company that receives the call, an arrangement built for callers inside the United States and Canada. From another country, carriers often block these numbers or bill the call as an ordinary international one. What happens depends on your carrier and plan.

A call placed over the internet that enters the phone network in North America in most cases reaches the 1-800 number like a domestic call, so it does not depend on whether your own carrier lets toll-free numbers through.

Reach customer service from abroad in three steps

01Find the office's number on the university's own website, in the student or applicant portal, or in an email the office sent you. Many offices list a direct number with a US area code, and some also have a 1-800 line; both can be called from QuikRing. Use only numbers from those places, not from search ads or messages.
02If you only have the 1-800 number, open QuikRing in your browser and sign up for a free account if you do not have one yet. The dialer on this page already has the United States selected. Type the number, for example +1 800 555 0199 (a fictional example), and check the per-minute rate shown before you call. The call enters the phone network in North America, so in most cases the 800 number receives it like a domestic call.
03Before you call, have your student or applicant ID, your date of birth and any case or reference number from earlier emails at hand. Offices often speak only with the student, or with a parent or sponsor the student has authorized in the portal, so check that before someone else calls. Check the office's opening hours in its US time zone, converted to your own, and find a quiet place with a steady connection. Write down the name of the person you speak to and what was agreed, and ask whether follow-up questions can go by email. Use the on-screen keypad to choose options in automated menus.

Older advice often points to Skype for this, but it closed in May 2025 and is no longer an option.

What a long wait costs

Frequently asked questions

Can I call a US university's 1-800 number from abroad?

With an ordinary phone, often not. Toll-free numbers are paid for by the company that receives the call, so carriers outside the United States and Canada commonly block them or bill them as international calls. With QuikRing you can call them, and the university's direct numbers, from your browser. The call is billed per minute at the United States rate shown before you dial, currently from $0.02/min; a few numbers carry their own price, also shown before you dial.

Can't I just call the university's direct number from my phone?

You can, but from abroad your carrier bills it as an international call at its own rate, which depends on your plan. Through QuikRing the same number is billed at the United States rate shown before you dial, so you know the cost of a long wait in advance.

What should I have ready before I call?

Your student or applicant ID, your date of birth and any case or reference number from earlier emails, plus the office's opening hours in its US time zone, converted to yours. If a parent or sponsor is calling, check first that the student has authorized them in the portal. A quiet place and a steady connection help, since lines can be busy at the start of a term.

Can I use automated phone menus?

Yes. The dialer has an on-screen keypad, so you can choose options and enter numbers when a menu asks for them.
