Call a US insurance claims line from abroad

To call a US health, travel or car insurance claims line from abroad, use a direct number if your policy gives one, or place the call over the internet to its 1-800 number with QuikRing. There is no SIM card and no app: the call is billed per minute at the rate shown before you dial. Right now it starts at $0.02/min. With a verified email, your first call is free for up to one minute, so you can check the line connects before you pay.

Why the 1-800 number on your policy often can't be dialed from abroad

Toll-free numbers are paid for by the company that receives the call, an arrangement built for callers inside the United States and Canada. From another country, carriers often block these numbers or bill the call as an ordinary international one. What happens depends on your carrier and plan.

A call placed over the internet that enters the phone network in North America in most cases reaches the 1-800 number like a domestic call, so it does not depend on whether your own carrier lets toll-free numbers through.

Reach customer service from abroad in three steps

01Look first for a number listed for callers outside the US, or a direct local number next to the toll-free one. It is usually in the policy documents or on the insurance card, in the insurer's app or member portal, or on its contact page. Use only numbers from those places, not from search ads or messages.
02If you only have the 1-800 number, open QuikRing in your browser and sign up for a free account if you do not have one yet. The dialer on this page already has the United States selected. Type the number, for example +1 800 555 0199 (a fictional example), and check the per-minute rate shown before you call. The call enters the phone network in North America, so in most cases the 800 number receives it like a domestic call.
03Before you call, have the policy number, the claim number if you already have one, and the date and place of what happened at hand, with any receipts or reports nearby. Check the claims office's opening hours in its US time zone, converted to your own, and find a quiet place with a steady connection. Ask how to send documents from abroad, and write down the claim reference and the name of the person you speak to. While you are on the line, ask for a direct number you can use if the toll-free one does not connect next time. Use the on-screen keypad to choose options in automated menus. QuikRing cannot call emergency numbers.

Older advice often points to Skype for this, but it closed in May 2025 and is no longer an option.

What a long wait costs

Customer service lines can keep you waiting. At the current United States rate of $0.02/min, 30 minutes on hold costs about $0.60. The exact rate is shown in the dialer before you call.

Frequently asked questions

Can I call the 1-800 number on my US insurance policy from abroad?

With an ordinary phone, often not. Toll-free numbers are paid for by the company that receives the call, so carriers outside the United States and Canada commonly block them or bill them as international calls. With QuikRing you can call them from your browser. The call is billed per minute at the United States rate shown before you dial, currently from $0.02/min; a few numbers carry their own price, also shown before you dial.

Is there a number I can use from outside the US?

Often yes. Many insurers, travel insurers in particular, list a number for callers outside the US in the policy documents, on the insurance card, in the app or on the contact page, so check there first. If you cannot find one, the 1-800 number can be reached over the internet.

What should I have ready before I call?

The policy number, the claim number if you have one, the date and place of what happened, and any receipts or reports, plus the claims office's opening hours in its US time zone, converted to yours. Ask how to send documents from abroad, and note the claim reference and the name of the person you speak to. A quiet place and a steady connection help, since lines can be busy.

Can I use automated phone menus?

Yes. The dialer has an on-screen keypad, so you can choose options and enter numbers when a menu asks for them.
