How numbers in Nigeria are built
A number in Nigeria is the country code +234 followed by a national number of 10 digits. The trunk prefix, where there is one, is dropped after the code.
Written locally as 0802 123 4567, an example mobile number in Nigeria is dialed as +234 802 123 4567 from abroad.
Leave out the leading 0 when you dial it with the country code.
Why a call to Nigeria fails to connect
- Keeping the leading 0: after +234 it is one digit too many, and the network rejects the call.
- Leaving out 011 (or +): without it your carrier reads 234 as the start of a number in the United States, not as a country code.
- A wrong number of digits: a number in Nigeria has 10 digits after +234.
Best time to call
Nigeria is 6 h ahead of the United States. When it is 12:00 in the United States, it is 18:00 in Nigeria.
That gap moves between 5 h and 6 h during the year, because one of the two countries changes its clocks for daylight saving.
The United States changes its clocks for daylight saving, so its offset moves between UTC-5 and UTC-4 during the year.
The United States moves its clocks on March 8 and November 1.
Nigeria does not change its clocks for daylight saving, so the offset stays UTC+1 all year.
Where a country spans several time zones, this page uses its main one, so the real gap can differ by a few hours.
The weekend in Nigeria is Saturday and Sunday.
