How to call India from the US
The dialing format for Indian mobiles and landlines, the time difference, and a cheap way to call from your browser.
The dialing format
From a US phone, dial 011 (the US exit code), then 91 (India's country code), then the 10-digit Indian number. On a mobile phone you can type +91 instead of 011 91.
Indian mobile numbers have 10 digits and start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. A number written locally with a leading 0 (for example on a business card) is dialed without that 0 after +91.
Landline numbers combine an area code and a local number. Drop the leading 0 of the area code: a Delhi landline written as 011 2345 6789 is dialed as +91 11 2345 6789.
Mind the time difference
India runs on India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, all year. It doesn't change clocks for daylight saving, so the gap to the US moves twice a year: New York is 9 hours 30 minutes behind India in summer and 10 hours 30 minutes behind in winter.
An evening call from the US East Coast around 8 or 9 p.m. reaches India in the early morning of the next day.
